We love autumn at The Garlic Farm: the glorious colours, the comforting flavours… and, of course, the reassuring knowledge that we’re fully equipped to keep any vampires at bay!

Every year, we host a Halloween Trail through our little patch of woodland, with lots of the team getting involved in creating quirky, sometimes rather esoteric installations designed to scare and entertain our visitors. This year has particularly creative installations so do pop in with your small people for a walk in the woods if you're on the Island in the next two weeks.

Over the years, we’ve had a lot of fun with the idea of garlic as a vampire repellent and have hosted some pretty wild and spooky parties. One particularly memorable year involved Colin dressing up as a headless horseman and quite literally terrifying unsuspecting members of the public out of their wits. It didn't help that he couldn't see where he was going as he rode his horse through the darkness with his head tucked inside his jacket!

But where does garlic's reputation for warding off the ghoulish creatures of the night actually come from?

Garlic’s reputation as a vampire repellent was famously popularised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but its supposed magical powers go back much further than Gothic fiction. For centuries, garlic has been hung in doorways and used in rituals across different cultures to ward off evil spirits and protect against misfortune. Perhaps its remarkable medicinal properties seemed so miraculous that people came to believe its powers extended far beyond the physical world.

Whatever the truth, we know there’s something rather magical about garlic.

Over the years, we’ve explored the devilishly delicious marriage of garlic and chilli to create a range of products that play on garlic’s folkloric powers against fanged creatures, with heat levels spanning everything from a gentle tongue-tingle to a full-blown fiery inferno.

At the milder end of the scale, our much-loved Vampire Relish is a firm favourite, alongside our chilli and garlic ketchups and mayonnaises. But if you like your food with a little more bite, it’s time to unleash the Vampire Slayer and Vampire Botherer hot sauces. These aren’t just about setting your taste buds alight; they pack layers of deliciously complex flavour alongside the heat. Try them in stir-fries, stirred into curries, mixed into dips or drizzled over soups. A little goes a long way!

New to our range are our organic cooking pastes, including a fiery garlic and chilli paste that makes adding a punch of flavour to your cooking very easy.

And don’t forget a few bulbs of our fresh garlic to ensure your autumn cooking has all the ghoul-defying goodness it needs.

After all, why settle for dull food when you can give it a stake through the heart?
